Still savoring the essence of Dutch Design Week, Eindhoven continues to thrive as the heart of Dutch Design. On November 27th, we present the documentary 'De A'Dammer – The Man Behind the Cabinet', showcasing the dramatic and compelling life of designer Aldo van den Nieuwelaar, the genius behind the iconic A'Dammer cabinet, a staple in countless Dutch living rooms since the 1980s. After the screening, Harm Scheltens and director Harro Henkemans will join a Q&A session. While almost everyone recognizes the A'Dammer, few know the story of its creator. The film reveals how Aldo van den Nieuwelaar, a visionary and perfectionist, dedicated his life to aesthetic purity and existence. His uncompromising nature made him famous yet vulnerable in a world driven by production, patents, and profit. Central to the narrative is his complicated relationship with Harm Scheltens, then director of the furniture factory Pastoe. Initially, they fought against the plagiarism of the A'Dammer, only to find themselves at odds when Pastoe sought collaboration with a Swiss designer of a similar cabinet. This ensuing legal battle drained Aldo's energy and inspiration, marking the onset of his decline. The documentary portrays a passionate life, from Aldo's Catholic childhood in Haaren to his free yet lonely existence in Amsterdam and Italy. It's a tale of ideals, beauty, identity, and the cost of staying true to oneself. After the film, Harm Scheltens—Aldo's main opponent in the film—and director Harro Henkemans will engage with the audience, providing insights into the tensions between art and commerce, compromise and conviction.
