When Chueca Dies: A Story of Resilience and Diversity
23rd November - 12th December 2025 — Natlab
Explore the vibrant and tumultuous narrative of Madrid's Chueca neighborhood.
In the heart of Madrid, 'When Chueca Dies' tells the vivid story of a neighborhood where freedom and diversity clash with political division. Featuring drag queens, lesbian couples, and refugees, they unite in the fight for their haven against a rising wave of intolerance.
Chueca, known as an international LGBT sanctuary since the 90s, faces scrutiny amid a changing political climate and incendiary rhetoric. The film depicts an extraordinary group of residents — from transgender individuals and drag queens to young married lesbians and refugees. Central to the narrative is Radio Chueca Libertaria, broadcasted from the iconic Berkana Bookstore, where the decline of the neighborhood and the precarious state of the global LGBT movement are discussed. Through a series of powerful scenes, characters often step into the shoes of their adversaries. A politician proclaims a new, peaceful world order: one without heterosexuals.
