A poignant documentary that sheds light on the plight of women facing intimate terror.
ABOUT THIS EVENT
Join us for a confronting documentary that addresses the fate of women trapped in cycles of intimate terror. This is not just a tale of individual tragedies, but an urgent warning: femicide is the tragic outcome of systemic inequality, sexism, and invisible control.
On International Women’s Day, we screen this film to break the silence. Director Floor Foole will be present for a post-screening discussion.
'Not Out of Nothing' compels us to reflect on what we allow as a society and what needs change. With empathy and a sharp eye, Floor Foole and Marleen Kuijsters illustrate the stories of two women who did not survive gender-based violence. The film features testimonies from two survivors, Juul Engel and Silvana van Ginneken, whose loved ones were murdered by men who claimed, controlled, and gradually isolated their lives until tragedy became inevitable.
This documentary emphasizes that femicide is not a one-off "outburst" but a pattern of intimidating behavior that often remains hidden for years. It reminds us that violence against women is not a private issue—it's a symptom of a deep-rooted power structure that women still fight against daily. Femicide does not come out of nothing; it is the ultimate, devastating result of patriarchal norms that we as a society must address.
