ABOUT THIS EVENT

Mama’ku: From Jakarta to the Moluccas is a captivating combination of the films Mama’ku and Sudah. On June 6th, directors Sven Peetoom and Aldo Agaatsz will be present for a Q&A session at Natlab! MAMA’KU On a journey through Indonesia, dancer Cheroney Pelupessy and her silent mother find a way to confront the suppressed past, marked by migration, domestic violence, and intergenerational trauma. This new documentary by Sven Peetoom (Between Shore and Ship – Silent Indonesian) examines these intricate layers. SUDAH The Manadonese Senna embarks on her first journey to Indonesia, seeking to connect with her mother Annie and other family members, hoping to uncover her family history. SVEN PEETOOM Sven Peetoom is a filmmaker and founder of There Will Be Film. Born in 1993 with Indonesian roots, he creates films that delve into the overlooked colonial past of the Netherlands in Indonesia and its implications for future generations. His first film Silent Indonesian (2022) was an unexpected success, evolving into a movement. His second film Between Shore and Ship (2024) achieved crystal film status within five days, becoming one of the most successful Dutch documentary releases of that year. CHERONEY PELUPESSY Cheroney Pelupessy is a choreographer, dancer, and creator with Indonesian and Moluccan roots. Her work combines modern dance with Indonesian and Moluccan movements, exploring how stories from the past continue to live in our bodies. Her first major performance, KETURUNAN (2022), revolves around her family history and the shared heritage of Indonesian and Moluccan communities in the Netherlands.
