Unlock the Secrets of Film with Twan Arts!

ABOUT THIS EVENT

Every child learns to read words in school, yet we never learn to read images. In this film analysis course, 'The Language of Cinema', film teacher Twan Arts challenges the audience to look at moving images (and listen) in a new way. Through numerous film scenes, both classic and contemporary, he delves into the rich history of cinema. This course consists of four evenings, and you purchase one ticket for the entire course. Each evening lasts from 20:00 to 22:15, with a short break at 21:00. - **Tuesday, March 10**: **PART 1 | THE BASICS OF FILM ANALYSIS & NARRATIVE** Begin your journey into film analysis by exploring the fundamentals: What is film? What tools do filmmakers have to tell their stories? Discover what film analysis entails and how it helps us understand the hidden depths of film narratives. This first evening lays the groundwork for interpreting storylines and introduces you to the art of storytelling in film. - **Tuesday, March 17**: **PART 2 | VISUALIZATION: MISE-EN-SCÈNE AND CINEMATOGRAPHY** In the second session, we explore the power of mise-en-scène and cinematography. Learn how the setting, costumes, and lighting shape the tone and themes of a film. Discover how camera movements, framing, and color not only please the eye but are crucial for storytelling and emotional transmission. - **Tuesday, March 31**: **PART 3 | THE POWER OF EDITING AND SOUND IN FILM** The art of editing and the influence of sound take center stage in the third session. Learn how editing shapes the pace, tension, and narrative structure of a film. We’ll also dive into the world of film sound, from subtle sound effects to grand musical scores, and discover how sound amplifies the emotional and narrative impact of films. - **Tuesday, April 7**: **PART 4 | A DEEPER LOOK: FILM THEORY AND INTERPRETATION** We close the course with an in-depth look at various film theories and how they influence our interpretations of films. Explore the role of the director and how their unique style and vision impact filmmaking. We will also discuss contemporary trends in the film industry and how cultural and societal themes are reflected in films, giving us a more complete picture of cinema's power and meaning.
